Classroom Reservation Requests in the DLC
- Who are the DLC classrooms meant to support?
-Our classrooms were specifically designed with foreign language instructors in mind.
-The color-coded, rolling chairs facilitate paired and small-group foreign language practice, allowing for quick conversational partner swaps and easy grouping.
-The additional wrap-around whiteboard surfaces allow for a wide variety of whole-group and small-group activities, making it easier to catch and correct student grammatical errors in real-time.
-The extra-wide Zoom capability of our smartboards allows for virtual fieldtrips, whole-class international connections, and guest speakers.
-Our computer lab has software for optimizing foreign language teaching and learning.
-We also have space for invited lectures, panel discussions, and other language community academic/club events.
-Lang/Lit TA trainings and professional development are also always welcome
- Can the DLC Classrooms be used for more than one day at a time?
The DLC Classrooms are primarily meant for special lessons, short-term projects, and events that need an “Active Learning Classroom” environment. We try to keep some space available for last minute teaching innovation and experimentation.
However, when there is room, we do allow longer-term reservations:
-It’s always okay to ask, but we can’t guarantee reservations will be accepted for quarter-long use.
-Language classes takes priority (see next section).
-Reservations for the following quarter can be requested starting in Week 4 of the current quarter, but might not be confirmed until later in the quarter (See next section for priority)
-Our classrooms are cannot be used as the official classroom of record through the registrar.
Important: If we do approve your use of a DLC classroom for a whole quarter, please understand that our reservation system is not connected to the registrar’s system in any way. We do not know when your final is and we don’t automatically reserve finals space for you. If you plan to use our spaces for giving a final, Please make a separate reservation for that.
- How are reservation requests prioritized?
Our rooms are generally available on a first-come, first-served basis, with some caveats:
-Priority is given to Instructors who are teaching language classes.
-Priority is given to Instructors who make their own reservations, rather than booking through a third-party (because this helps in avoiding later misunderstandings with regard to complex reservation situations).
-Priority for instructors who did not use a DLC room the previous quarter.
-From our original booking page: Quarter long reservations of our Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs) are available for use by any foreign language/literature instructor, but particularly those who would like to innovate or experiment with student centered learning and technology. Language instructors who have a focused instructional goal that needs to be practiced in an Active Learning Center should let us know on the reservation form; TA Training or any TA-taught courses where the TA is learning how to teach in an ALC is also good for us to know; if you have taken the Center for Educational Effectiveness (CEE) Teaching and Learning Complex Series (https://cee.ucdavis.edu/tlc) we'd like to know about it; we also would like to make sure we leave space for anyone who did not use an ALC for an entire quarter in the previous quarter (except for the purposes of instructor training).
-When in doubt... just ask. If we're able to say yes... we will! Contact Mary at [email protected]
- Can the DLC Classrooms be used for non-language classes or events?
- -For non-language teachers, there are Active Learning Classrooms in the Teaching and Learning Complex that are assigned as regular classrooms and we encourage instructors to ask their department scheduler to request one of those classrooms in banner.
-However, within Lang/Lit, if we have both space and staff available, we do sometimes accommodate other events/trainings. Contact Mary at [email protected] for more info. - What rooms are available? What's in each room?
- How early should I make a reservation? Do you accept last minute reservations?
- For reservations for the active quarter: We try to accommodate all language instructor requests in the order they come in, and we aim to confirm your reservation within 2 business days.
For very last minute (like same day or next day) reservations: Please fill out the normal reservation form (so we have it for our records), but we may not see the form in time to get it on our calendar. So, after you fill out the form, is call the DLC Reception Desk directly (530-752-1508), and ask the staff there to double-check the Reservation Calendar for availability. If the room is available, you can ask them to pencil you in, but please do also fill out the form so we don't accidentally double book.
For reservations for the next quarter: We generally start processing those around Week 4 of the current quarter.
- How do I cancel a reservation?
- What do I do if someone is already in a room I reserved?
If there is already a class in a room you have reserved, we can help:
(1) Before you interrupt the instructor, please check your original confirmation email from Mary from [email protected] (or mcmryan@).
Any conflict notifications should (hopefully!) be in your original reservation confirmation, normally highlighted at the top. There should also be instructions in that email about what room your reservation request was shifted to.
If you've made an error, don't panic, just ask the staff at the Reception Desk in Olson 53 to help you put a sign on the door so that your class knows the correct room to go to and doesn't interrupt the other class. (Staff can also help make a last minute room reservation if you need it, in the case of date or time mix ups. We're here for you, even on the days that get complicated.)
(Note: If it is Finals Week... are you sure you reserved a room for your final? This is not done automatically in the DLC. If you didn't specifically book a room for your final, we can probably still help. Go tell the staff member at the DLC desk in Olson 53. They'll help you find you a room and put a sign on the door for you, noting the change for your students.)
(2) If your confirmation email says that the room was reserved for you, and there haven't been any follow-up emails from Mary ([email protected] or mcmryan@) about a conflict, then please notify the staff at the DLC Reception Desk in Olson 53 immediately.
They will check the official DLC Reservation Calendar and let the other instructor know that they are in the wrong classroom. They will help the displaced instructor find another room, and post signs if needed to get both classes back on track as quickly as possible. (And if this situation happens after-hours, and it's a newer staff member working at the desk by themselves, please feel free to show them this page. ;))
