Fostering Awareness, Interaction, and Multiliteracies through a Relational Pedagogy

A relational pedagogy aims to foster reflection on how technologies and mediums influence the design of communication. In the context of today's global communication networks, language learners need to understand how language interacts with other modes of expression, and how materials and technologies play a role in meaning-making practices. This lecture will present five principles of a relational pedagogy and provide examples of the kinds of questions that teachers can get their students thinking about. A critical awareness of how meanings are made, framed, and transformed in particular contexts of language use is essential to twenty-first century learners because they face a singularly pervasive mediascape that is potentially as exploitative as it is emancipatory.
