COMPELLING READING AND PROBLEM-SOLVING: the easy way (and the only way) to high levels of language, literacy and life competence. Stephen Krashen (www.sdkrashen.com)...Voorhies Hall 126
This presentation presents these hypotheses: We acquire language and develop literacy by understand messages of great interest to us. We learn new concepts and facts by attempting to solve problems of great interest to us. Smart people don't "study": Instead, they read what interests them, and take great pleasure in working on "compelling" problems. But what is interesting to one person may not be interesting to others. School needs to understand this, and help students find and develop their own paths.
