Research of the past decade has shown that the language network interacts with the limbic system (memory and senses) in more ways than previously thought. For learners, the question is how to benefit from this type of accelerated brain activity when processing words in a foreign language. Several vocabulary apps have been developed to facilitate this process, yet, learners seem to get tired of these apps rather quickly. The first part of Dr. Schuetze’s talk provides inside into the journey a word to be acquired in a foreign language takes through the brain. The second part highlights key features of vocabulary apps to keep the learner’s interest.

ULF SCHUETZE is Professor of Second Language Acquisition in the Department of Germanic & Slavic Studies at the University of Victoria, Canada, where he is also the Associate Director of the Digital Second Language Learning Lab.

His research in computer-assisted language learning, lexical processing, as well as the sustainability of technology in second language acquisition has a direct application to teaching. His most recent publication, the monograph Language Learning and the Brain: Lexical Processing in Second Language Acquisition (Cambridge University Press, 2017) illustrates the dynamic environment involved when recording and producing words.
