Peer and AI Review + Reflection in Spanish Heritage & ESL Classes
Invited Presenters
Sophia Minnillo, Angie González, Andrea Hernández and Ana Ortega Pérez
In the past three years since ChatGPT’s public release, the language teaching community (including our Davis Language Center) has created countless pedagogical innovations that leverage (or limit) student GenAI use in order to enhance learning. In this talk, we discuss the Peer and AI Review + Reflection (PAIRR) pedagogical model for developing student writing skills. We describe how PAIRR has been implemented in Spanish as a Heritage Language and English as a Second Language courses at UC Davis, with an emphasis on how the model can be tailored for various proficiency levels and course types. In addition to sharing research-driven suggestions for teaching with (or without) GenAI, we will foster dialogue within the DLC community about practices and stances best suited to our local context.
