Curriculum-Aligned Language Assessment: Placement & Proficiency

Fuqiang Zhuo, Ed.D
UC Davis Language Center

This presentation provides a technical roadmap for designing curriculum-aligned foreign language assessments in both linear and adaptive formats. We examine the construction of high-quality items—such as fill-in-the-blank and sentence ordering—and demonstrate how to validate them using Classical Test Theory (CTT) and the Rasch Model. Participants will learn to interpret (and calculate) critical psychometric indices—including item facility, discrimination, and distractor efficiency—using outputs from Canvas LMS Item Analysis and other open-source tools. The session concludes with strategies for reporting, cut-off score calibration and reliability, equipping attendees to refine their item banks and transition toward efficient Computer Adaptive Testing (CAT) models.
